Description of the list SNOBOL4

SNOBOL4 is a mail list for the discussion of the SNOBOL4 programming language, the string-processing and pattern-matching language developed at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1960s and early 1970s. Implementations include the original Bell Labs "SIL" version, Macro SPITBOL, SPITBOL/370, SITBOL, and FASBOL. This is also a forum for the discussion of various SNOBOL4 pre-processors, such as Rebus and Snocone.

Suggested discussion areas might include programming help and techniques, implementation issues, program sharing, and general language philosophy. The list is unmoderated.

To join the list, send a mail message to "listserv@mercury.dsu.edu" with the line "subscribe SNOBOL4 Your Name" as the message body. "Your Name" should be your real name (your e-mail address will be used automatically for the subscription).

Submissions to the list may be sent to "SNOBOL4@mercury.dsu.edu". Each submission will be forwarded automatically to all list subscribers.

To be removed from the list, send the message "unsubscribe SNOBOL4" to "listserv@mercury.dsu.edu".

For information on other list requests that you may issue, send the message "help" to "listserv@mercury.dsu.edu". The subject line of a list request message is ignored. Note that "listserv@mercury.dsu.edu" stops reading list requests upon encountering a line containing "--". If your mail program precedes the message body with an informational line containing "--", the list processor will not see your list requests! (This does not apply to normal list submissions sent to "SNOBOL4@mercury.dsu.edu".)

If the SNOBOL4 list is useful and generates enough subscribers, we will attempt to create a Usenet SNOBOL4 newsgroup.

Please address any questions, comments, or suggestions related to the list by e-mail to the List Owner.

The SNOBOL4 mail list is sponsored by Dakota State University, Madison, South Dakota. The list is maintained by Mark Emmer, Salida, Colorado.
